Photographing wild places needs a mix of physical toughness, extraordinary skill and emotional sensitivity. See the captivating results in The Wilderness Gallery, Tasmania's unique purpose-built showcase for environmental photography. These beautiful and dramatic images from photographers based in Australia and around the world will excite your imagination, lift your spirits and expand your horizon.
The gallery shows up to 250 images at any time in 10 linked galleries, with additional space on the walls of the conference centre and the travelling exhibition gallery. The exhibition space is built around an enclosed garden of local rocks and native plants. The gallery area includes two small theatrettes to show film, video and computer images.
Situated within the grounds of the Cradle Mountain Chateau, the $2 million centre exhibits the work of well-known photographers who specialise in the field of nature and landscape photography.
The capturing of images from some of these remote places requires photographers whose skills include surviving in difficult, even alien environments. They are expert scuba divers, rock climbers, kayakers, bushwalkers and expeditioners.
The curatorial process was both challenging and revealing. The Gallery received more than 1000 images before making a final selection for the Gallery’s initial exhibition. Gallery Co-ordinator Tracy Thomas and resident photographer Dave Broos spent six months selecting and assembling the photographic works for the current exhibition, images that reflect the rejuvenating power and extraordinary beauty of our natural world.
This exciting and unique cultural component has been integrated into the Cradle Mountain Chateau. Hotel guests will enjoy access to a specialist library of books for sale and periodicals dealing with photography, Tasmanian literature and the environment.
The gallery is open daily from 10am until 5pm, and is free to visit if you stay at the Chateau.
The Gallery space is also available for meetings and conferences – see our Conferences section for more information.
Visit the Gallery shop to purchase images – including original limited edition archival prints.
