WHA anniversary photographic competition
The Tasmanian wilderness World Heritage Area is a globally significant natural and cultural wonder bordered by Cradle Mountain and Strahan, and running deep into the states south-west.
It is the equal highest-rating WHA on Earth, alongside Mt Taishan in China, meeting seven of the 10 criteria for world heritage listing. The unique wildlife, plant species, landscapes and cultural heritage of the area are what makes it so special, and led to its listing in 1982.
The Tasmanian WHA can be experienced in many ways, with walks of various challenging lengths at
Cradle Mountain and from
Strahan; or cruises on the majestic Gordon River and unique experiences exploring the history of
piners and miners in the region.
On December 14, 2007, the Tasmanian community celebrates the 25th anniversary of the declaration of the Tasmanian wilderness World Heritage Area.
